ABOUT HER
MY STORY
Originally from Denver, Colorado, Sara found her passion for writing and photography at an early age. In May 2024, she received her bachelor’s degree in journalism from MSU Denver. In August 2024, Sara began her two-year master’s program at UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism as a Dean’s Fellow, a leadership development initiative which fully funds the program for first-generation college students.
WHAT WORK DOES SHE DO?
Sara Martin is an award-winning journalist and has written for local, state and national publications. Most recently she finished a four-year tenure at MSU Denver’s student newspaper, The Metropolitan as editor-in-chief. During her time there she covered the pro-Palestine encampment, sexual harassment, misuse of public funds, open meeting violations, crime and various other investigative stories.
In between her time as editor-in-chief, Sara held three internships during her undergrad degree. She first worked as a media relations intern with the National Hockey League team, the Colorado Avalanche during the year the organization won the Stanley Cup. Afterward, she moved on to covering local news for Colorado Community Media in a variety of 24 different newspapers. For her third internship, she spent 10 weeks in Chalkbeat’s Colorado bureau covering the effort to improve U.S. schools for all children, especially for students who have historically lacked access to a quality education.
In her time freelancing, Sara covered northwest Denver neighborhoods for two monthly sister newspapers, The Denver North Star and G.E.S. Gazette, with a hyperlocal focus on issues like health disparities, parks and recreation, elections, education, zoning and development. Sara also briefly worked with Ms. Mayhem, photographing assignments related to arts, culture and portraits for a women-owned online magazine covering Denver’s queer and alternative space.
She has seen publications in The Denver Post, The Colorado Sun, Colorado Public Radio and various other outlets.
